It’s that time of the year again when we all start to count down and look forward to a brand new year ahead!
With all the parties, celebrations and get-togethers with family and friends, I’m sure everyone wants to look his or her best.
You certainly don’t want to be told you gainer weight, or you look a little on the plump side, or pudgy even by family and friends.
Dieting and losing weight can often be burdensome for many individuals especially when not given correct advice. There are many misconceptions as to what you should or should not eat when dieting such as this one – ‘You can only eat salads and fruits for 3 meals a day’.
Imagine only being able to eat veggies for an extended period of time – that would be extremely dull. And life would be meaningless.
The concept behind losing weight is to be under your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure); if you are eating under your TDEE, you will lose weight (a deficit).
It’s this simple!
So theoretically, you could be eating fast foods everyday and still lose weight as long as you are under your TDEE; however reasons not to do so is because, fast foods do not have high quality micro and macro nutrients; whereas healthier, cleaner foods such as steak, chicken breast, greens have vitamins necessary for building quality body composition and also contain higher quality of proteins, cleaner carbohydrates and healthy fats.
For all readers, you are in luck today because I have created a list of foods that are highly recommended when losing weight, so that it doesn’t get boring and becomes much more enjoyable!
Weight Loss Food Friend #1: Sweet Potatoes
Ok, I know most of our grandparents who lived through WWII would attest to having an overdose of sweet potatoes to survive. But let the truth be said that sweet potatoes are one of the best foods to eat on a diet, not only because they taste great, but they are also calorie dense foods.
In other words, this is a food that does not have a high amount of calories and yet can still make you full! Additionally it is high in Vitamin A as long as other vitamins. This is a source of a good amount of clean carbohydrates, thus providing you with ample energy throughout the day.
Weight Loss Food Friend #2: Tuna
Tuna. Tuna is often well sought after in the strength training/bodybuilding community. It is extremely high in protein, helping your muscles replenish themselves. Also, it is an inexpensive food that can keep you full for a long period of time!
On a side note, when buying canned tuna, make sure to look for tuna in water rather than those that are contained in oil, as you will be able to reduce fat intake in small ways as such.
Weight Loss Food Friend #3: Avocados
It may sound ironic but fats are still required in the body for reasons such as to store energy and stimulate hormone production. Avocados are a great source of healthy fats and can be well mixed with other foods. They can even be made into a guacamole dip for healthy corn chips! They are also high in fiber and potassium.
Weight Loss Food Friend #4: Salmon
Here’s another fish friend and one of my favourites. Salmon.
Even though you may think salmon is quite oily, it is incredibly healthy and nutritious. Besides being able to keep you full for a long period of time due to its calorie dense composition, salmon is full of protein and also healthy fats. One of the fatty acids – Omega 3 helps with reducing inflammation, and stimulating metabolic functionality.
Weight Loss Food Friend #5: Low-Fat Alternative Foods
The Health Promotion Board (HPB) has done an excellent job in helping us categorise low-fat alternative foods. Simply look out for the healthier choice symbols on the packaging. It is in the shape of a pyramid.
When going through the grocery aisles try picking out low-fat versions of certain foods! This greatly contributes to your overall intake of foods which could help reduce amount of fat consumed by the end of the day. Many foods have these options such as milk, yoghurt, chocolates, crisps etc.
Losing weight can be enjoyable and fun! Remember the key to losing weight with your diet is to monetize moderately and know your boundaries, but don’t be too overly cautious that it becomes a burdensome chore! Hopefully these 5 foods will be able to make your weight loss journey easier!
